Quick Follow Up
I just wanted to add a quick follow up regarding Jerry and his son, Daniel. Ring 103 made a donation to the SPCA in honor of Jerry and a note was sent to Daniel by the SPCA. Jim also sent a sympathy card to Daniel from the Ring. Daniel responded with a heartfelt note pictured above. Sean sent a broken wand notification to the Linking Ring of the IBM.
Welcome to our newest Member, Bill Winter
Bill has been a long time IBM member and has decided to join our local Ring. We are very happy and excited to have Bill as our newest member. Bill performed a great story piece about five young ladies and a price. It was nicely presented and ended with a box having 5 different colored pieces of rope strung through it. As the prince's bride was chosen, she was confirmed by the box as each rope was pulled from it, only the chosen one was tied to the dagger within. It was a very entertaining piece of magic. Bill also shared with the group how he used AI to help generate the story line and graphics for the trick.
A Tragic Loss
Scott and Janet Robinson lost their son, Shane, in a tragic accident recently. Scott is an accomplished magician and author. Both he and Janet run the TRICS magic convention in Charlotte, NC. If you would like to make a donation in memory of Shane, you can do so by clicking on the Donate button below.
Trevor Duffy Lecture
Trevor Duffy visited the Norfolk IBM Ring 103 in May 2024 and lectured on 'Thinking with Intention'. It was a very good lecture with a bit of everything for everyone to take away with them. Trevor had money magic, card magic, and other illusions for close-up to parlor to stage.
He kicked off the lecture with some classics including a torn and restored banknote and a two coin trick where they would dissappear and appear in amazing ways. He produced a full deck of cards from nowhere and continued to wow us. Trevor even produced pears from a sealed can of peas. He finished off the first half with a very entertaining version of Diminishing Cards.
To begin the second half of the lecture, Trevor shared some experience and advice on how to handle situations when things go wrong during a performance and how to come through them. He continued the magic with a version of a signed coin to an impossible location and a lively comedy routine called 'Tale of a Raccoon'. Finally he wrapped up his lecture with tips on ways to practice just 10 minutes a day and be able to retain all of the information. Everyone had a great time spending the evening with Trevor and I, for one, definately learned a few valuable lessons as well.

Dan Harlan and SarahElla Phant Lecture Summary
Dan Harlan and SaraElla Phant visited Ring 103 on May 3rd and presented an awesome lecture for us. Dan recently moved to North Carolina and showed us some great material including some classics as well as some hard hitting new releases. Dan started the lecture, as he does many of his live shows, with The Awakening. This is a unique rope handling based on the professor's nightmare trick where three ropes change in length over and over again. This trick was recently released and has been a top seller so far. Dan showed another recent release called Mental Block which is his version of color vision. A child's wooden block is placed in a box and Dan was able to name which side of the block was facing the opening each time. Finally the block disappears completely from the box. Next, he showed us an unreleased trick he calls Mystery of the Missing Sock where he explains how socks sometimes get separated in the dryer when doing laundry. He pins two separate sets of socks together to later find out one sock goes missing, but magically appears pinned to the other set. Dan showed some classic material as well including Hold it Buster and Stash.
SarahElla showed us a trick on how to memorize word and stunned us with how quickly she could recall almost a dozen word. She then gave us tips on how we can do it too.
Dan concluded the evening with a few card tricks utilizing a Si Stebbins stack and finally an incredible trick where the contents of a coca-cola bottle travels magically across the room into a cup.
It was great to see everyone who attended. If you could not make it, you can check out more of Dan's material at TheMysticTower.com or at MAGICon , August 19-21 in Clayton, North Carolina.
Joshua Jay Visits Virginia
Joshua Jay arrived in Virginia Beach in the middle of his 45 city book tour in support of his new book, How Magicians Think and stayed to give a lecture sponsored by the Norfolk IBM, Richmond IBM, and Williamsburg SAM.
The book tour started with a magic show that included tricks about time travel, predictions, and objects that would appear and disappear. One of Joshua Jay's tricks started with the ending by displaying a card and ended with the beginning by having that card selected in the first place. Watches and rings disappeared and appeared again in unexpected locations. One of the highlights of the evening was where multiple audience members provided numbers that, multiplied together, turned out to be a significant date against all odds. That date then appeared later on a predicted candy wrapper within the barcode, and later still when multiple audience members chose cards and Joshua found all them in record time which corresponded to the earlier date. After the magic, Joshua sat down to answer questions about magic and his book. The group then moved outside the auditorium where Joshua's books could be purchased and signed.
Joshua met up with a couple members of the Norfolk IBM and Williamsburg SAM the following day. Jim McDonald of SAM Assembly 226 and retired interpreter at Colonial Williamsburg, gave a great tour of Yorktown, Williamsburg, and the surrounding historical areas. A couple more magicians met the group for meals before heading onto the lecture up the road in Toano.
Joshua Jay's lecture was one for the ages. Members of the Norfolk IBM, Richmond IBM, Williamsburg SAM, and other guests gathered to see some amazing magic and learn a few things about the tricks and presentation. The first half consisted of some of Joshua's classic material including Hitchcock, Charming Chinese Challenge, Inferno, Prism Deck, and Triad Coins. All were performed beautifully and taught clearly. Joshua closed the first half with a masterful presentation of his take on Cylinder and Coins which was set to music. Coins continually vanished and re-appeared inside and outside of a cylinder made of a rolled up dollar bill and concluded when a full shot glass was revealed to be inside the bill. The second half was a bit shorter, but was packed full of one magical moment after another. He amazed with a series of card tricks where aces were found, sets of cards impossibly matched, and a card was found by memorizing every other card in the deck to eliminate all but the selected card. He concluded the lecture with Trojan Deck, a trick he recently released. Joshua used it as a closer in his shows where he and a spectator continually mix separate decks of cards which finally comes together where the cards in one deck match, in order, to those in the other all while telling the beautiful story of how his parents met. Items were for sale after the lecture. However, if you wanted to purchase his book or some of his products, you had to act fast as most of the items sold out quickly by popular demand. I think everyone who attended found something they enjoyed, could use and also learned a few things along the way. Overall, both days were filled with magical experiences that I won't soon forget.
